No surprises on the invoice. If we find anything else, we call before we touch it.
If the clutch is already slipping, book a time soon. A slipping clutch overheats and can damage the flywheel too, which makes the repair dearer.

What the price includes
- Clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing, as a new kit
- Gearbox removal and refitting
- Flywheel and crankshaft rear seal checked while the gearbox is out
- Clutch fluid changed and the clutch bled, where the clutch is hydraulic
- Basic settings with a diagnostic tool, where the car needs them
- Road test, checking the clutch bite point and the gear change
What the price does not include
- Flywheel or dual-mass flywheel. If it is worn, we call you and tell you the price before we carry on.
- Clutch master cylinder and a slave cylinder mounted outside the gearbox, if they leak.
- Crankshaft rear seal and gearbox seals, if they leak. The gearbox is already out by then, so they are worth replacing at the same time.
- Faults inside the gearbox, and gearbox oil changes.
- Dual-clutch gearbox clutches and automatic gearbox repairs. Those are different jobs.
About this work in detail
The clutch disc is clamped between the flywheel and the pressure plate, and its friction surface carries the engine's power to the gearbox. With the pedal down, the release bearing pushes on the pressure plate's diaphragm spring and the clamp lets go.
The friction surface wears a little with every pull-away and every gear change, much like a brake pad. Once it has worn thin, the pressure plate no longer clamps the disc firmly enough, and the clutch starts to slip. The disc, the pressure plate and the release bearing are replaced as a set, because they can only be reached with the gearbox out.

How to recognise a worn clutch
- The clutch slips. The engine revs rise but the speed does not keep pace. You notice it first uphill, when overtaking and in the higher gears.
- The clutch bites higher than it used to. On many cars this is a sign of a worn disc, but on its own it does not yet prove wear.
- The clutch judders when pulling away. The car shakes or jerks as you lift the pedal.
- When you press the pedal down, there is a rumble or a squeal. The noise usually comes from the release bearing.
- Gears are hard to engage or grind, because the clutch does not disengage properly.
- The clutch smells burnt on a hill start or with a trailer.
The clutch hydraulics, the flywheel and the gearbox bearings can cause similar symptoms. If the pedal sometimes stays on the floor or feels slack, the fault is often in the master or slave cylinder rather than in the clutch itself. So we do not replace a clutch on the strength of a symptom alone.
When the clutch is replaced
Manufacturers do not usually give a clutch a replacement interval in kilometres or in years. A clutch is replaced when it is worn. Many clutches last 150 000 to 300 000 km, but city driving, towing a trailer, slipping the clutch and resting a foot on the clutch pedal wear it noticeably faster. If the engine's power has been raised by tuning, a standard clutch can slip before it is worn.
Age matters mainly for the clutch fluid. On many manual cars the clutch draws its fluid from the same reservoir as the brakes, and then the fluid is renewed when the brake fluid is changed, at the intervals the manufacturer sets.
The dual-mass flywheel
Most newer diesel cars and many petrol cars have a dual-mass flywheel. It is made in two parts, and springs between them damp the engine's vibration before it reaches the gearbox. The springs and the bearing wear over time. A worn dual-mass flywheel rattles at idle, knocks when the engine is switched off, or makes the car shake at low revs.
The flywheel is not included in the price of a clutch replacement. With the gearbox out, we check its play and its surface as the manufacturer instructs. If the flywheel is worn, it is worth replacing at the same time, because otherwise the gearbox has to come out a second time later. A new flywheel is an expensive part, so we call you and tell you the price before we carry on.
How the work is done
- We road test the car, listen to the noises and check the clutch hydraulics. We tell you what we found and what the work costs. Parts are ordered only once you have accepted the price.
- We raise the car on the lift and remove whatever is in the gearbox's way. On a front-wheel-drive car that is usually the driveshafts, the gearbox mount and often the starter motor; on a rear-wheel-drive car, the propshaft and often part of the exhaust.
- We support the engine and lower the gearbox on a gearbox jack.
- We replace the clutch disc, the pressure plate and the release bearing. We check the flywheel and the crankshaft rear seal. If either needs replacing, we ask you first.
- We centre the new clutch disc, tighten the pressure plate bolts to the manufacturer's torque and refit the gearbox.
- We change the clutch fluid, bleed the hydraulics and make any basic settings. Finally we road test the car and check the bite point and the gear change.
How long it takes
It takes about 3 to 8 hours, depending on how the gearbox comes out. On the easiest front-wheel-drive cars it is half a day's work, but a four-wheel-drive car or a cramped engine bay can take the whole day. Plan on leaving the car with us for the day. The clutch kit is ordered for the car, so we tell you when it will be ready at the same time as we agree the price.
What the price depends on
The price of a clutch replacement varies from car to car. It depends on:
- Drive layout and engine bay. The gearbox comes out differently on front-wheel, rear-wheel and four-wheel drive cars, and four-wheel drive has the most to remove.
- The flywheel. If the dual-mass flywheel has to be replaced, the total rises considerably.
- The type of release bearing. On many newer cars the release bearing and the slave cylinder are one hydraulic part inside the bell housing. It is replaced with the clutch, and it costs more than a plain release bearing.
- The parts. Original and aftermarket parts differ in price. We tell you which parts we use.
- Extra findings. A leaking crankshaft rear seal or clutch cylinder, or seized bolts, add work.
So we check the car and tell you the price before the work starts.
The clutch and the inspection
At the inspection the clutch is checked during the test drive and the underbody check. Under Traficom's inspection regulation, a slipping or heavily juddering clutch is grounds for rejection, and in a dangerous case the inspector can impose a driving ban. The same applies to faults in how the gearbox and the clutch work. A deficient anti-slip surface on the clutch pedal is a minor fault that earns a repair notice.
Cars are rarely rejected at the inspection because of the clutch. In Traficom's statistics for 2025, the whole transmission accounted for 2 394 faults that led to a rejection and 32 087 repair notices, and the transmission covers the CV joints and propshafts as well as the clutch. The statistics do not say how many of the faults concerned the clutch.
What you can check yourself
- Test for slip on a road with no other traffic. Drive in third gear at low revs and press the accelerator to the floor. If the revs rise faster than the speed, the clutch is slipping.
- Notice where the clutch bites. If the bite point has risen to the top of the pedal travel or changes from day to day, tell us.
- If the clutch and the brakes share a fluid reservoir, check that the level is between the min and max marks. Also check whether the footwell mat under the pedal is damp. A damp mat can mean a leaking master cylinder.
- Record any odd noise on your phone and note whether it comes with the pedal up or pressed. That helps us tell the release bearing, the flywheel and the gearbox apart.
When not to drive the car
A clutch that slips only slightly can usually be driven to the workshop, but a time is worth booking soon. Do not keep driving if
- the clutch pedal stays on the floor or goes slack and no gear will go in
- the clutch slips so badly that the car cannot climb a hill or keep up with traffic
- the clutch smells strongly burnt or gives off smoke
- there is a loud metallic knocking from the gearbox
- the brake warning light comes on.
In these situations, have the car towed to the workshop. If the clutch and the brakes share a reservoir, a clutch leak lowers the brake fluid level too, and the fault then affects the brakes as well.
If something else needs fixing
We do not start work you do not know about. If the car needs something else fixed, we call and tell you what the extra work costs and what happens if it is left undone. You decide.
Once we have seen the car, we tell you the price and whether it is a fixed price, a maximum price or an estimate. The work starts only once you have accepted the price.
We work to the motor vehicle service and repair terms approved by the consumer advisory board of the Finnish motor trade.
