Brake pad and disc replacement

Choose what you know you need: pads only, or pads and discs, front or rear. If you do not know, choose pads. We measure the discs during the change and show you the measurement; if they are near the manufacturer's minimum or scored, we tell you, and the new price, before we do anything.

Pad life depends on how the car is driven far more than on distance. A typical interval is 30 000 to 60 000 km. City driving wears pads faster than motorway driving, and an automatic wears front pads faster than a manual.

There are four signs, and they deserve to be taken seriously in this order. A metallic scraping noise under braking means the pad is gone and the disc is being damaged right now. A squeal is the wear indicator, and there is a little time left. A longer stopping distance and a soft pedal point at the fluid or a caliper, not necessarily at the pads. Pulling to one side under braking means one side is braking harder than the other.

Discs are replaced along with the pads when their thickness is near the manufacturer's minimum, or when the surface is scored or distorted. We do not replace discs automatically.

The prices are fixed and include labour and parts. They cover passenger cars with standard brakes; on large and sport brakes the discs cost several times more, and we tell you that price before the work starts.

Together, suspension and brakes account for 67 per cent of all faults that fail a passenger car at inspection. The figure is from Traficom's 2025 statistics. It surprises nobody who looks at cars from a lift every day, but it is a good reason to have the brakes checked before the inspection rather than after it.
